Answer engine optimization: how to get your business cited by AI

A practical guide to answer engine optimization: how ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews choose sources, and the steps that get your business cited.

When a customer asks ChatGPT “who’s the best family lawyer in Fairfax?” or Google shows an AI Overview for “how much does a new HVAC system cost in Virginia,” a handful of businesses and sources get named. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making sure you are one of them.

How answer engines choose what to cite

AI answer engines do not have a secret ranking algorithm you can game. Broadly, they:

  1. Retrieve candidate sources — often from a search index, which is why traditional rankings still matter.
  2. Evaluate which sources clearly and credibly answer the question.
  3. Synthesize an answer, sometimes citing or linking the sources used.

So the levers are: be retrievable (rank), be easy to extract an answer from (structure), and be trustworthy (consistent facts and third-party validation).

The AEO checklist

1. Lead with the answer

Put a direct, one-to-two sentence answer at the top of each page or section, then expand. Every FAQ on our own site is written this way. A question like “How much does SEO cost?” should be followed immediately by a number range, not three paragraphs of preamble.

2. Use question-shaped headings

Structure content around the actual questions customers ask. Headings like “How long does a roof replacement take?” map neatly to prompts people type into AI tools.

3. Add structured data

Schema markup — Organization, LocalBusiness subtypes, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList — tells machines exactly what each page is about and who you are. It is one of the cheapest AEO wins available.

4. Make your business facts consistent everywhere

Name, address, phone, services, service areas, hours and founding details should match across your website, Google Business Profile, directories, LinkedIn and review sites. Inconsistent facts make AI systems less confident about you.

5. Earn mentions where AI looks

Answer engines lean on sources they already trust: major review platforms, industry directories, local news, professional associations, Reddit and forums, and well-known publications. A mention on those sites can matter as much as a link.

6. Publish genuinely expert content

AI tools favor content that shows first-hand experience and expertise — especially in health, legal and financial topics. Attribute content to real people with real credentials, and include specifics a generic article would not have. This matters most for law firms and medical practices.

7. Keep the site fast and crawlable

If AI crawlers cannot fetch and parse your pages, you will not be cited. Server-rendered or static HTML, clean markup and fast load times help. Consider an llms.txt file that summarizes your site for AI systems.

8. Measure share of voice

Run a fixed list of customer prompts across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews each month. Record whether you are mentioned, cited or linked, and which competitors appear. That trend line is your AEO scorecard.

AEO for local businesses

For local service businesses, AI assistants often lean on map and review data. That makes local SEO — a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews and consistent citations — a core part of AEO. Customers asking “best plumber in Richmond” are likely to see businesses with strong local signals.

Where to start

  1. Ask the major AI tools the five questions your customers ask most. Note who gets named.
  2. Rewrite your top service pages so each answers its core question in the first two sentences.
  3. Add FAQ and LocalBusiness schema.
  4. Fix inconsistent business information across the web.
  5. Pursue mentions on the directories and publications that showed up in step 1.

If you would rather have it done for you, our AI SEO and answer engine optimization service handles the audit, content, schema and tracking — built on the same foundation as our Virginia SEO work.

FAQ

Quick answers

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the process of making your content and business information easy for AI-powered answer engines, such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity, to understand, trust and cite. It focuses on direct answers, structured data, consistent entity information and presence on the sources those systems rely on.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They are closely related and often used interchangeably. Generative engine optimization (GEO) usually refers to visibility in generative AI answers specifically, while answer engine optimization is a slightly broader term that also covers featured snippets and voice assistants. The core practices are the same.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AI answer engines rely heavily on pages that already rank well and are technically sound, so strong SEO is the foundation of AEO. AEO adds answer-first formatting, entity clarity, schema and third-party mentions on top of good SEO.
